Jonabel Huavas is a self-taught Filipina visual artist based in the province of Antwerp. She primarily paints with watercolor and gouache. Her research-based paintings are usually centered around the female body and representations of nature. Originally a biologist, she cross-pollinates the scientific system of knowledge with her Filipino ancestral wisdom, creating a hybrid of vocabulary for narrating identity, selfhood, kapwa (shared humanity), and interconnectedness with nature. By intertwining her Filipino cultural wisdom and memory with scientific knowledge, which is predominantly Western, Jonabel explores personal and social issues and aims to provide healing, resistance, and rematriation.
