Naomi James Schatteman researches liminal states of being in the world.
In recent months, she has developed a protocol; she meets people, from different backgrounds, ages… with whom she has an intimate conversation, about moments when they have been in a liminal state or about the role of liminality in their lives. These are not documented, but Naomi translates these conversations into a dance, drawing and epistolary practice. Naomi becomes a conduit or mediator, having these intimate conversations, but not exposing them. The protocol is very strong and clear. The formalities are not aimless bureaucracy, as we know it, but a way of protecting the letter writers, interlocutors and listeners.

In a highly polarized world, perhaps now, more than ever, we need an in-between space.

Her body becomes the archive of liminality.
