Chantal Tichit
Chantal Tichit was born on the Aubrac plateau in Lozère -France -
She spent her childhood summers there, and some of her family still live there.
Even far away from home, she still lives there.
When she was learning etching at the Beaux-Arts, the furrows dug into the metal to hold the ink, deposited on her leaves, drailles, fences, low walls, rocks..., it was the graphics of the Aubrac pastures that were inscribed in her work. She still remembers her grandfather cutting granite, digging rases, herding cattle...
The need for exchange, the desire for something different, for a universe different from that of the staid people that this rugged land "constructs", led her towards other emotions, other contours.
In her artistic work, she has always questioned the relationship between places and bodies in the social landscape, observing how some submit to it and how others assert themselves.
His uneducated but curious and loving grandfather helped shape the landscape of his childhood. His grandmother, never leaving the hearth and the pluche, always brought him comfort on a piece of sugar soaked in lemon balm water.
Both, of course, obeyed the codes assigned to their sex. Without question, each played his role, one on the outside, the other on the inside. Each was attentive to the other, to others, and in all cases, to her.
She, born a girl, loved to observe, dream
triturate papers and brushes,
stealing her cousin's faster, higher-riding racing bike,
not inclined to submission,
astonished by the astonishment her behavior aroused,
then outraged by the wrath and even the violence, always opposed!
She spent her childhood and adolescence under the sign of censorship, bumping up against incomprehension, intolerance, contempt and arbitrariness.
His grandparents were his refuge and remain his support to this day. While her grandmother let her experiment with cakes and ball games, at the risk of not being able to taste them or of breaking a window, her grandfather would tinker with an easel or offer her a book on Marie Curie!
She always spent long moments in the workshop of this peasant grandfather, at the workbench, around the vise, fighting the forbidden. Even today, she can still be found contemplating the boxes filled with dust, rusty nails and other curiosities to be pierced.
*Drailles in French refer to the thin paths traced by the comings and goings of the herds in the pastures.
*In local French, a rase is a trench used for irrigation.
