Jaïr Roosveld
Jaïr Roosveld, an artist hailing from Surinam and presently residing in Rotterdam, commenced his artistic odyssey at the esteemed Nola Hatterman Art Academy in Paramaribo. His artistic evolution began with a keen interest in sketching people and houses, serving as the cornerstone for the development of his profound passion for portraiture and architecture. Upon undertaking his studies in architecture in the Netherlands, Roosveld submerged himself in the diverse cultural milieu of museums, drawing deep inspiration from luminaries such as Twombly, Giacometti, and Basquiat. Recognizing the latent potential for his own artistic expression, Roosveld embarked on a transformative creative journey in the Netherlands, laying the foundation for a distinctive artistic identity. Influenced by his Surinamese cultural heritage, Roosveld injects vibrant colors, folklore, and storytelling traditions into his work. His canvases, adorned with a mysterious script of words and symbols, beckon viewers on a visual journey, urging them to unravel the intricate layers of meaning woven into each piece. Creating a visual moment in the viewing process: "You are on the verge of understanding but have not yet understood."
