Leen Van Dommelen is a Belgian performance maker and visual artist based in Brussels. She studied at Sint Lucas Gent, sculpture at La Cambre Brussels and obtained a masters degree in visual art and Choreography at ISAC ( Institut Supérieur des Arts et Choregraphies at Académie des Beaux arts Brussels). Her work, made up of performances and installations, seeks a vulnerable confrontation between the viewer's gaze and the introspective, self-conscious eye.

I delve into the complex interplay between psyche and body focusing on the duality of control - holding and losing it. How the body opens up and the complexity of the inner world seeps out. I try to transform subjective experience into tangible matter. Matter as something to hold on to, as a way of shaping and transforming back, looking at it, distancing from it. In doing so, the body is fragmented, distorted, enlarged and pulled out of context, taking up space and sometimes even escaping from itself. My focus in this is to explore different states and the tension between holding and letting go in the body. The whole spectrum from tense, cramped, nervous, uncomfortable, present, (hyper)self-conscious, shrinking, being stuck to relaxed, surrendered, moving, trancelike, abandoned, dispersed....

At the same time, I explore the mechanisms going on behind the scenes of the visible body, often in relation to, and sometimes in tension with, external reality shaped by societal norms and expectations. This not in an objective and measurable way but poetically and vulnerably, moving between cruel and playful.
