Arno Camps
Arno grew up in Oostham, Limburg. He has considered various secondary schools and in 2019 considered industrial art (product design) at the Hasselt art academy. He then started his fashion education at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts of Ghent, where he completed the education and progressed to the sculpture department which he also graduated.
Arno's work starts from the deformation of the body in which he looks for what is possible and rejects what should be. There is a continuous interaction between sculpture and fashion, their boundaries meet but they do not cross them. He does this through sculpture, fashion, drawings, video, poetry, sound and photography.
His work is a counter-reality that applies the idea of the aesthetic and ugly in its existence and development. It is irregular, rough, weathered, incomplete and stunted. The 'experience of ugliness' or the experience of what we know as 'not correct' is separate from the experience of beauty. It is not the ugly self to which we respond with rejection or disgust. 'Ugliness' is the aesthetic manifestation of that which disrupts and breaks through the 'ordinary' or 'normal' in the world that creates and sustains life: the threat of the monstrous and the contamination by the formless.
New embodiments emerge that cannot be called figurative nor abstract. A cat and mouse game between recognizability and alienation that serves as a reaction and criticism against personal and social subjects that he expresses through poetry. The bodies become detached from humanity and form a monstrous human world. This creates a physical design process with new applications of shape, color, material and scale. These elements are derived from fashion, cartoons, nature, raw industrial elements and machines.
His poetry starts from personal emotions that are often triggered by images from his environment and personal image archive. This allows moments to be relived, interpreted and put into words. He also approaches his personal work in this way to give it the most appropriate title that, in his opinion, best describes the atmosphere and character of a work.
His drawings and paintings originated as digital prints and further evolved into collages, drawings and paintings. Each time the image is digitally manipulated, creating textures, shapes and color combinations in a chiaroscuro image. They are rather figurative and create part of the monstrous and ugly counter-reality. Elements are also derived from fashion, cartoons, nature, raw industrial elements and machines. These images are mainly printed on different types of textiles that provide textures and material properties. After this, they are processed in the process of creating a silhouette, giving them different appearances through image shifting, relief formation and details such as folds, grommets and tears.
He creates environments and characters using sculptures and silhouettes in a scenographic setting. Sculptures form a larger coherent whole and become more dynamic. Visualizing and exhibiting them in this way broadens the attention to the whole he wants to show. It liberates and opens up its reality, making everything more and more linked to the world. His counter-reality takes shape in the now. He tells a personal story through various media and portrays this through photography, video and presentation.
Everything forms its counter-reality in which rituality and incantation play a major role. He experiences the mysterious as something normal and ritualizes his life, experiences, thoughts and feelings in a game that he himself shapes as resistance and criticism against and on reality. He tries to play this out through various media and the representation of his reality. A personal structure and support is formed that helps him understand the world, after which he resists it again.
