Babette Gloria Vincke
Babette Vincke is a 21-year-old artist from Antwerp, Belgium. Her passion for photography led her to Brussels, where she is currently studying at LUCA School of Arts. A dreamer and adventurer at heart, Babette has spent the past four years living not only in Belgium, but also in Lyon, France and Turin, Italy—experiences that continue to shape her creative perspective.
Her practice is rooted in analogue photography, driven by curiosity, intuition, and natural environments. When she’s not behind the camera, Babette’s latest fascination lies in the world of pickling and fermenting—an equally patient and experimental process.
I have many diverse interests, but photography has been a constant in my life since childhood. The camera offers me a balance between control and adventure, the known and the unknown. It functions as a magnifying glass, binoculars, microscope—or simply as a window through which I observe and study the world around me. Analogue photography, in particular, embodies this mindset for me. It is also the medium in which I feel most at home.
I see myself as an explorer, allowing my surroundings to surprise and inspire me. Curiosity and intuition are the driving forces behind the photographic work I create. I have always lived in a city and truly enjoy its lively energy and chaotic atmosphere. As a counterbalance, however, I often seek out nature in my work. There I can let go of control and follow my instincts—preferably in my own bubble. Natural phenomena such as swirling rivers and majestic forests are recurring themes. Instead of directing others, I use myself as a point of reference to relate my personal experience to the visual narrative. I also support my work with scientific or artistic research. For instance, in Synergy (2024), I explored the fungal networks that connect trees.
In my artistic process, I search for places that are unique and unfamiliar, yet close to home—as seen in the photo series Scaldis (2023). I actively seek new perspectives and angles in this and other work. By experimenting in the darkroom, for example with format and lighting, I explore ways to give my images greater depth and layering—a depth that I also experience in nature.
