NL: Elien Verschueren is een beeldend kunstenaar uit Antwerpen. Ze werkt graag met materialen die ze als kind gebruikte zoals kleurpotloden, stiften en zelfdrogende klei. De diepe vertrouwdheid met deze materialen stimuleert het intuïtief verbeelden en het onderzoeken van terugkerende obsessies zoals handen, voorouders en rust. Recent vond ze dezelfde speelsheid in vrij borduren.
ENG: Elien Verschueren is a visual artist from Antwerp. She enjoys working with materials she used as a child such as coloured pencils, markers and self-drying clay. The deep familiarity with these materials encourages intuitive representation and exploration of recurring obsessions such as hands, ancestors and rest. Recently, she found the same playfulness in free embroidery.

ENG: Elien Verschueren is an amateur artist who works as a Dutch-as-a-second-language teacher in adult education in Antwerp. Her current practice includes drawing, painting, sculpture, embroidery, video, writing and installations. She likes to explore the inherit ‘in-betweenness’ of being an amateur and having pleasure as the main drive or rationale to process and produce.
Her work evolves around the following research questions: Where do aesthetic decisions come from? How to navigate being seen/unseen? How to reclaim softness? What is a body for? What serves the body? Who are our elders?
She uses materials, sounds and images as portals to reclaim or discover pieces of intuitive, non rational knowledge that although personal surpasses the individual. She uses play, rest and pleasure as catalysts and guides to create texts, sensorial experiences and visual art. Simultaneously she likes analyzing her positionality, experiences and thoughts and tries to find out how these exemplify, echo or rub against hegemonic and often oppressive systems and ideas.
Viewings and exhibitions
- Juli 2024: Monsters School
In July 2024 she was a participant in 'Monsters School' an initiative of WpZimmer in the framework of 'Come Closer', the summer program of the Middelheim Museum in Antwerp. During this collective experiment in undoing and becoming other she broadened her perspective, deepened her knowledge and learned to trust her intuition and others even more.
- September 2023: living room exhibition
In September 2023, she celebrated her birthday with a living room exhibition and showed friends, family and interested parties her artistic work including the installation ‘Cabin by the sea
- Juni 2023: groepsexpo FOR US
After several years of valuable but to the outside world invisible exploration, Verschueren showed the work 'Mor och far' at the group exhibition 'FOR US' in June 2023, again facilitated by Fameus.
- Zomer 2020: GAST LOCKDOWN edition
In the summer of 2020, she made the installation 'Lavation' during 'GAST LOCKDOWN edition' (the festival and residency program by Fameus for leisure artists in Antwerp). 'Lavation' was a small-scale ritual focused on rest, connection despite restrictions and giving space to your imagination.
