Elke Hubens _ contemporary figurative sculpture
From early on, I have been searching for what connects us, humans. What is our essence? When are we our truest selves? As a sculptor, I investigate the essence of our being human and the perennial nature of our existence. I depict this Elcker-ick story, taking the human figure as a vessel of expression.
I work exclusively with clay: a fragile yet powerful material. I love its primal nature and its transformative and cyclic qualities. Clay moves from earth to clay to stoneware and back to earth - when it’s ground to chamotte, one of the building blocks of the clay I work with. Even after its final passage in the kiln, stoneware keeps transforming: color, glaze, fracture lines or the play of light turn the sculpture into something new
