Isabelle Reynders (°1995) lives and works in Borgloon, Belgium. She obtained her MA in Visual Arts from Luca School of Arts in 2018, where she received the Wanatoe Graduation Award. Between 2018 and 2020 she studied Western Philosophy at the Institute of Philosophy (KU Leuven), and since 2022 has been pursuing studies in Printmaking at Kunst.BEELD Hasselt.
Reynders’ artistic practice is defined by research into the key concepts necessary for imagining a sustainable transition. Working across analogue and digital techniques, she explores the intersections of printmaking and photography. Her work is deeply rooted in philosophy and engages with ecological, political and social themes. At the core of her practice lies a continuous material investigation into sustainable processes — each work emerging from a conscious engagement with the material itself.
Her earlier project Dark Ecology (2018) exemplifies this approach: a reimagined print designed as a fully biodegradable object made from wood, rice starch, and paper. Drawing inspiration from traditional Japanese craft and ecological philosophy, Reynders’ work seeks to reconnect image-making with the material world — where the earth itself becomes both subject and medium.
Her current research explores how natural organic and mineral pigments can be turned into inks suitable for the intaglio printmaking process of Polymer Photogravure. This project aims to create sustainable, archival full-colour photographic prints using the very materials found freely in the physical world depicted in the prints.
