jeroen de wandel
Jeroen De Wandel uses photography as a starting point to create new images from all sorts of material (photographic or otherwise) from his personal image archives. From ‘regular’ photography, his work evolved into (analogue and digital) collages, using his own photography in different shapes, contexts and meanings.
In exhibitions he often creates installations, in which photography may or may not still play a role. His work has to be situated on the crossroads between photography, mixed media and installation
Main themes are the interaction between our psychological (well) being, technology and manipulation, time and the use of the medium photography.
At the moment, I work mainly on manipulation (the influence of fear on our society, the belief in ‘alternative facts and realities’), the functioning of our memory (how we deal with memories) and how our brain interacts with information. And consequently, how it is susceptible to manipulation.
The psychological effect of the social algorithm is often underestimated. The ‘like’ culture cleverly plays on the addiction-sensitive reward mechanisms in our brain. It can lead to echo chambers, the creation of a ‘false I’ and psychological problems. Targeted content influences voting behaviour and contributes to convergence. You could say that the more the digital world opens up, the more our real world becomes limited. What does this mean for future society: doesn’t the social animal, man, become antisocial and more alienated from reality by these new technologies?
Information has always been regarded as power; however, disinformation or targeted ‘manipulated’ information nowadays yields much more power: the total surrender of the individual to an idea. In this respect, control communism in China, cults and movements such as QAnon are not so very different. Polarising opinions, fake news stories packaged as conspiracy theories, they are everywhere these days. The algorithms, designed to hold the attention span as long as possible, feed the sensationalism endlessly. Technology is used by just about anyone with a commercial or political goal as the ultimate weapon to gain control over what someone thinks and how someone acts.
My work is at the crossroads of photography and other art forms in which photography is still a starting point, but is increasingly (in)fused with other media.
From ‘normal’ photography, my work evolved into (analogue and digital) collages and then into other media. In exhibitions, I often create installations, trying to blend photography with other (visual) arts.
I find photography as sculpture or even performance much more exciting than a frame on the wall. Which is not to say that I don’t do that anymore, but it is becoming more integrated into the whole, the making of a complete ‘own world’.
