Love stories

Love stories

La xilopintura is a technique that I began to develop in the early 90s when I worked at the Taller Experimental de la Gráfica de la Havana, as a result of my search for new ways of making art. This technique arose from experimentation and combination of graphic art: specifically “xylography” or wood engraving, which was the technique I used the most and “painting”; which resulted in the so-called xilopintura.

Xilopintura was the name I chose to refer to this process, ultimately resulting in a technique that I have continued to use for years until the present. It is made on wood but can also be made on linoleum and plastic.

How it is made: 1- The drawing is made on the wood, 2- The wood is roughened with cutting tools, reserving the line of the figure in the drawing. This step is done with gouges for working with wood. 3- The wood that has been cut is coloured.  4- Finally, black ink is applied to the wood with a printing roller to delimit the drawing previously made and the xilopintura is finished.

Theme: Through xilopintura I tell stories. Urban stories that describe human life from day to day, representations of love stories, literary narratives or personal experiences. It is mostly figurative and the image of the human figure is always present. Love, individual search, despair, life, illness, joy, creativity are examples of themes that appear in the works. (e.g. the series LOVE STORIES)
