This tapestry is the first and one of four canvases under the project name Earth. Upcycled, dedicated to our planet and preservation of its resources.
The subtitle of this work is LAND. My first intention was to show a process of human mind finding harmony and balance through the image of natural design: landscapes and earth substances.
My life and art practice are mindful.
I bought 28 kg of second-hand yarns on the Internet with a plan to use absolutely everything that fell into the bag.
It took me 6 months of weaving and 2 months of break since the war in Ukraine has started. The tapestry remains unfinished, and the narrative has changed dramatically.
On 24th of February, I left my studio apartment in Kyiv with no understanding what future would bring, leaving everything behind without proper thinking.
After coming to a safe place in Antwerp, I felt the need to continue my art practice by finishing this piece and telling a story about experiencing war, both my personal and my people’s.
I asked a colleague to go to my apartment and pack my weaving tools and loom with attached tapestry to it. Then I found a courier, who delivered my work from address to address, Kyiv-Antwerp.
The LAND traveled by land, and now it is ready to be finished.
