Ukiyo-E

Ukiyo-E

“Living only for the moment, savouring the moon, the snow, the cherry blossoms, and the maple leaves, singing songs, drinking sake, and diverting oneself just in floating, unconcerned by the prospect of imminent poverty, buoyant and carefree, like a gourd carried along with the river current: this is what we call ukiyo.”

Ukiyo-E is an ongoing series of installations combining sculpture with video and sound.

The installations find their origin in the online gameworld of ‘Second Life’. Just like the floating world of the Japanese prints ‘Second Life’ provides the player with a space to lose oneself. A space where a kind of timeless perfection is guaranteed and guiltless diversion is natural. But where until recently the viewer had to immerse himself in the utopian image, we can now shape the virtual world itself and make our own escape from daily life a reality. Ukiyo-E is about the possibilities this kind of virtual space has to offer, and it's limits.
