Western colonists brought some of their most revered ancestral medicines with them to be prepared for the common ailments awaiting them in their new homes. The herbal knowledge connected them to the universe, history and ancient practices of community health and well-being. While many of those Western herbs have established healthy webs of interrelations with native plants, many western settlers have lost their connection to their ancestral plants and roots, to a point of what is called ‘nature blindness’ today, where the outside is seen as threatening unless reduced to lifeless lawns and monocrop agriculture.
