Handweven wordt sedert 2024 officieel erkend als immaterieel erfgoed in Vlaanderen !

Handweven is een handwerktechniek om textiel, zoals kledij, tapijten of huishoudtextiel, te vervaardigen.  De handwever bedient een manueel weefgetouw waarop twee sets draden loodrecht met elkaar worden vervlochten: de kettingdraad die over de lengte loopt en de inslagdraad die de kettingdraden kruist.

Handweven is eeuwenoud. Reeds in de prehistorie werden plantenstrengen ineengevlochten.  In Vlaanderen zijn heel wat handwevers actief. Dat zijn niet enkel hobbyisten.  Het is een oude ambacht. Handweven mixt kennis, kunde en traditie met creativiteit en innovatie.

Handweven wordt overal ter wereld en in alle culturen beoefend. Het is immaterieel erfgoed dat velen aanspreekt en mensen met diverse achtergronden verbindt.
