La Prochaine Station
La Prochaine Station
Soon after my arrival to the Blackfoot prairies in 2013, I experienced a great sense of unease or settler discomfort, which I expressed in the painting, La Prochaine Station created in 2015 (Acrylic on cardboard). It shows my spouse and me naked, waiting in a train station to express the raw feelings and uncertainty we felt about our roles in our new life then. Instead of leaving, we committed to move beyond our newcomer identity by learning from local people about the local histories. I have since incorporated this learning into my professional interactions as an artist, educator, and community herbalist.
