Inspired by the work Finding the Mother Tree by Suzanne Simard, I explored the Zoniëwoud in an attempt to find these mother trees—also known as parent trees or wolf trees. These trees are hubs of knowledge in ancient forests and are comparable to our own intricate relationships with grandparent or parent figures. With this idea as a new perspective, we can see the forest in a way we haven't before: as a complex social structure of synergistic relationships.

The experimental use of printing methods such as photograms and pre-exposure of light-sensitive baryta paper adds an extra dimension to the story. I use my own body as a way to highlight these narratives and bring more attention to them. The video shows my grandmother passing down her knowledge of poetry to me—she is my mother tree. In this way, I explore my own social network as I explore the complex fungal designs of the forest.
