Moncayo-san
Moncayo-san
About the print itself
Moncayo-san (Moncayo-さん) is a print made with the mokuhanga technique (japanese woodcut). It has a magnolia wood key block, and three color blocks (shina plywood) for building up the different gradients that make this misty landscape.
Although it is not visible on the photo, the pink sky contains some mica powder wich gives it a bit of shine in real life.
The paper is Awagami's Kozo Select. A very light but resilient japanese paper.
Colors used are a mix of Holbein Tosai Pigment Paste, W&N gouache and mica powder.
The story
I made this specific edition of five prints (nickname: Moncayo with Winter Colors, the definitive edition ✨) during August and September 2024, at Fabiola Gil Estudio in Zaragoza. These prints were displayed at FIG Bilbao 2024 (Festival Internacional de Grabado y Arte sobre Papel).
These blocks have been reprinted several times with different color schemes and papers as test prints, but this was the first time a real edition was made.
The Moncayo is a mountain that can be seen from my city. It raises to 2316m of altitude. I spent several years living in an appartment with a window looking to the northwest, and there is where this mountain is.
In winter, the peaks spend some months covered in snow, and bring us the cold and strong wind called "Cierzo", a key characteristic of this zone.
