Mute map 02
Mute map 02
This image is part of a series name "Mute maps", of five fictional cartographies created during my 2023 residency in Fujikawaguchiko. The five prints combine imaginary geographical lines with textures sourced from photographs I took during my travels in Japan—capturing patterns, fragments, surfaces, and material details. More broadly, this work reflects on the history of Japanese cartography, with a particular reference to Tadataka Inō, the most renowned modern Japanese cartographer. He applied a scientific method to mapping and was especially known for having manually surveyed almost the entire surface of Japan’s main island—on foot—later in life, after a career in a completely different field. This artwork is part of a wider investigation into how we represent territory as we move through it and as we inhabit it.
