Recharger
Recharger
“Recharger” is built up of felted wool and intertwined woolen cords. Old, discarded electrical cords – waste material of capitalist production that would otherwise be thrown away – also make their way into it. Its shape is inspired by an insect’s cocoon – suggesting a comforting space for processing that allows for transformation to happen. Visitors can stand under the work to take a break, as it partly shields them from the other surroundings. At the same time, the work itself can be seen as an organism that is in the process of recharging.
The cocoon shape can be associated with wool-damaging moths, to reflect on the vulnerability of places of shelter and the precarious balance between different species cohabiting the earth. The wool is naturally dyed with madder and cochineal, so the work is created in collaboration with different beings – plants, insects, sheep, a human body – and reflects which colors and textures our bodies were capable of achieving. With this piece, I want to emphasize the need for care, softness and rest, in contrast to the harsh, fast-paced, individualized society we live in.
