A Flowering of Hope
A Flowering of Hope
About this sculpture:
The sculptural medium of plasma art - blown glass filled with noble gases - creatively combines art, science and technology. These flowers are made from flameworked borosilicate glass, filled with a low pressure of krypton gas, and illuminated by a high voltage, high frequency electronic power supply. The krypton gas creates a glowing white plasma light, and a coating of phosphor inside the blown glass provides a brilliant purple color.
Created during the 2020 pandemic, for a virtual exhibition of the Plasma Art Alliance, the flowers serve as an symbol of hope and renewal in times of uncertainty. In my video, the wildflowers glow in the darkness when I touch the glass, and then the video dissolves to to reveal the sunlit garden that inspired their making.
