A Continuous Act of Remembrance
A Continuous Act of Remembrance
What does a twisted wrist mean? a stretched arm? a hand that talks in the air? a hand that holds one’s head as they rest it? In 'A Continuous Act of Remembrance' frames regular gestures out of their context, as if they were being recalled in a later moment, by the body as well as by the perceiving eye.
During my residency at Zinnema (Brussels), I was able to begin the first phase of this project, which
took the form of a video installation and a series of photographs. I invited performers to reinterpret the
gestures in this glossary, but also to draw on their own bodily memory. In a dimly lit studio covered
with black curtains, the gestures unfolded without interruption, in a suspended temporality. I used a
digital camera to move around the bodies and photograph them from a distance, with the intention of
capturing the ephemeral, the fleeting, as if I were taking mental images. The black and white treatment
accentuates the reduced light, detaches the gestures from their context and makes them more visible,
while rendering them ambiguous as to their origin or intention.
