Rehearsing My Mediated Self (Can't Get Enough) COLLAGES
My master project, Rehearsing My Mediated Self (Can’t Get Enough), is an installation consisting of three parts and an audio piece. The work focuses on my experience of OCD and the resulting sense of self-alienation.
This is the official text that accompanied my work during the graduation show:
I have a compulsive habit of taking pictures of everything, often several of each subject. To preserve, or perhaps to satisfy a need. Arising from my OCD, I’m used to performing myself through small rituals. It often feels as if I’m observing myself from the outside. A second reality presents itself, one that instructs me what to do. I am both the viewer and the creator. This quiet performance has become another form of control: over-curation and the habit of saving. My camera roll holds over 200,000 images. I try to hold on to the things that make me interesting. Everything, enclosed in a grid, reducing me to systems and tiny squares. This archive, this compulsive trace, is made visible. Obsessive recreating, screen capture after screen capture. Now exposed to light and air, now part of the room. Grounded in the world. Unique again through presence.
