The Big Scroll
The Big Scroll
In ‘The Big Scroll’, visitors are presented with an overload of visual information that at first glance looks very colorful and attractive, but on closer inspection makes the viewer feel uncomfortable.
The colorful, detailed collages also contrast with the dark sculptural work, on which ‘the truth its the lie is the truth is...’ has been written by hand, as if in an endless mantra.
With The Big Scroll, Jeroen De Wandel wants to make us think more about our own online scrolling and voyeuristic behavior, about the value of truth and our difficult relationship with technology. Algorithms and artificial intelligence can help humans and nature restore the balance that has been lost.
Algorithms and artificial intelligence can help humans and nature restore the balance that has been lost, or... they can completely undermine democratic values and human rights under the impulse of human greed and lust for power.
In one exhibition, the viewer walked on a collage between walls of black painted newspaper paper through which sensational headlines pierce. The collage shows a stream of images, you walk into an oppressive social media scroll in which what is true and false becomes increasingly blurred as you progress through the installation. Here and there are openings to the “real” world.
In another exhibition, a shop window at WARP was completely covered with a collage, while a sculptural work floated ino the room.
