Cutting Chokecherry Branches

Cutting Chokecherry Branches

My artistic practice recognises that Indigenous-led learning aims to reveal the "violent shadow of modernity," prompting my crucial repositioning away from a Western dominant cosmology that prioritises economic value over ontological responsibilities to the land (Andreotti et al., 2015). My art intends to focus precisely on the potential for renewed settler awareness. I am interested in how transformative experiences can move settlers beyond affective states of reconciliation.

Cutting Chokecherry Branches (Cyanotype with gold and red acrylic accents), shows three female settlers dressed respectfully while helping behind the scenes of ceremony preparations. Taken in the periphery of the Blackfoot ceremonial summer camp space where family and visitors gather, this image represents the warm welcome we have received from our Blackfoot hosts in response to our respectful and observant presence. We are no longer ‘settler outsiders looking in’ but allowed to see the world from the ‘inside out’.
