Freedom to Fall
Freedom to Fall
Freedom to Fall reflects on contemporary technofeudalism, the power dynamics in which the masses create value for digital platforms for free. Furthermore, there is a desire an internet-based freedom, as, for example, digital nomads; however, this freedom comes with uncertainty and a lack of rights. My work shows the seemingly immaterial, aerial net of the internet towering above our physical power structures, highlighting the tensions created by our dual existence in both realms. Is it possible to choose whether to be part of a less personal, international network woven by companies or to remain tied to our traditional political units, which may seem too heavy with commitments? Nets are a central topic of my series, as they allude to the traditional skilled labour of textile work and fishing, and raise the question of what our relationship is to the (inter)net? Are we the users of the net, or are we and our attention the prey to be caught?
The artwork is a 3D-printed lithophane, an image that is only visible when backlit, creating a sight similar to a digital screen, even though it has a physical form. As 19th-century lithophanes depicted popular images of hope and faith, my lithophanes revisit these topics in our current era.
