“Proto” is a piece inspired by ancient ceramic vessels, and explores the religious and ceremonial uses of these objects. Coloured slip has been applied to rugged and unevenly textured clay, to remind the audience of the materiality of the piece. My pieces attempt to represent queer narratives, and the symbolism of thorns reference folklore and fairytales, wherein thorns often represent overcoming adversity. The thorns and organic shapes in “Proto” are referential to nature, and how organisms have built up defence mechanisms to protect themselves.
