Burning Water
Burning Water
My work presents itself as two sides of the same coin. On one hand there is the longing for a utopian lifestyle in harmony with others and nature, which derives from my atheist, naturist upbringing. On the other hand there is the feeling of unease and threat which is rooted in global actuality. With war, ecological disaster, social unrest and pandemics lurking on the horizon constantly.
I combine events and scenes from my daily life with elements from mythological or religious stories. These stories hang over everyday reality like a blanket of associations and help shape how I look at the world. Friends, family and lovers thus become characters in a fictional universe. They seem to take part in mysterious rituals, moving between the mundane and the obscure. Painting explosions and fire seems to be a way to ward of fears and get to grips with the unimaginable.
My imagery is rooted in personal experiences, fears, dreams and desires. The power and impotence of the human body with its fragility and beauty, its lust and strength, continue to inspire me.
I like to work in a very direct way, often without an underdrawing, and love the combination of control and improvisation evoked by watercolour or liquid oil paint. The oil paintings are often created during a long process, where various ideas are painted over and alongside each other in a collage-like manner until a satisfactory image emerges. In contrast, my watercolors are made very fast. I love the way this medium forces me to release control and act in the moment.
