Het Chinees porselein en de Antwerpenaars
Het Chinees porselein en de Antwerpenaars
Another illustration for the book Oude Stad Nieuwe Ogen.
In Hong’s story, “Het Chinees porselein en de Antwerpenaars,” she shared something seemingly small yet incredibly meaningful to her: porcelain. A special link to her homeland, a connection she never imagined she’d find so easily here. To her surprise, people in Antwerp also admired and treasured Chinese porcelain just as much. Hong sent me photos of various pieces, and I was happy to draw them. But as I worked, I realized the story wasn’t only about porcelain—it was filled with memories and love.
Hong spoke about her mother, celebrating Chinese New Year together, the food her mom cooked, the porcelain vases that decorated their home, and their visits to the market. These memories carried a warmth that went beyond objects, so I asked her for a photo of her mom. I wanted to draw them both, adding that final, meaningful touch to the illustration.
