Listen to Sun and Grandmother Moon
The arrival of horses has had a great influence on Blackfoot culture. It caused moves in the social order because it elevated those capturing horses in status for their bravery, and the more horses someone raised or stole, the greater their social reputation grew among clan members. Horses also changed the nature of work, because no longer were the people reliant on their loyal canine companions to move their belongings via dog attachments known as travois. Being much stronger, horses allowed people to travel faster, further distances and with more provisions or equipment, so they became more flexible on their seasonal rounds across the Blackfoot territory.
Horses ended ‘Iitotasimahpi Iimitaiks’ - the Dog Days era.
