A thing and a shadow of a thing explores the contrast between contemporary digital jacquard weaving and traditional manual rag rug weaving. Rags are used both as material in the works and as image content: I collected second-hand rags, photographed them, and wove the images with the physical rags. While rag weaving is typically linked to rustic, utilitarian settings and jacquard weaving to refined, industrial or decorative contexts, this project seeks to merge and challenge those associations.
