The Chambers

The Chambers

The Chambers, mixed media, variable dimensions, 2019

Located in the former Namyeong-dong Anti-Communist Investigation Office a site of torture during Korea's military dictatorship. The Chambers reconstructs the spatial and temporal layers of the building's memory. Beginning from the uncanny discovery that the faucets in the interrogation rooms still function, I extended a hose through the narrow window, letting water flow outward as a gesture of returning the site's unseen memory to the present. The work reinterprets a forbidden historical space through a contemporary language, sensorially exposing the traces of power and the persistence of memory.
