I WAS HERE?
I WAS HERE?
During one of our walks trough the city we found this abandoned, completely anonymous and forgotten space between two buildings. Upon considering it, the idea of planting a bone between the buildings took a hold of my mind. That same day I started sculpting a femur bone that would take approximately 7 hours to finish. Someone said that I (my body with all its muscles bones and tendons) had become a Lynchean agent of this bone that had to be there. I think it is a great description.
The title; ‘I WAS HERE’ is a grafitti we encountered on one of the walks. The moment we looked at it, it really encapsulated the entire situation. A very strong sense that in reading this, we recognize that ‘we are here’ and recognize the soul of everyone that was here before. And in the next moment when we step away, we will be part of that soul. For the title I added a question mark.
The work was shown together with the wOrk of Elene Pichkhadze, who made a multitude of posters advertising different ways of ‘using’ this yet unused space she coined ‘the gap’ as if she was presenting it in a meeting with real estate developers. The entire scene reminds me somewhat of an oilmoney pitch to build a megaproject in the sahara that is filled with nothingness and an occasional bone sticking out of the sand.
