Jan Jambon stomach examination (Whats inside?) [for ART CONTEST]
Jan Jambon stomach examination (Whats inside?) [for ART CONTEST]
(Winner of the ‘jury prize’, which was awarded as a kind of honorable mention next to the first three prizes)
For this work I put on the suit of a family member and recorded a video of a gastroscopic camera going into my mouth and making its way into my stomach in the office of my doctor. With the help of a friend (Ruben Pattyn) we were able to deepfake the face of the Flemish minister of culture onto mine. In this way, we see the inside of Jan Jambon, a powerful politician and flemish minister of culture that in some ways gives the impression of being a shell of a human. This work was shown in the exuberant dining room of Maison des arts in Brussels. The same exuberance we see returning in our own digestive tract aswell as in the five governments of Belgium and its politics.
Accompanying the video, were around thirty nylon masks of the same face. One could wear it and it would stretch around their face the same way the face is stretched around mine in the video. Visitors were allowed to wear the mask all over the exhibition and have the chance to look at all the art on view trough the eyes of this Flemish minister of culture. The video and the masks are one in the question; Whats inside ? It is both a literal and figurative question from an artist to his minister of culture.
After the exhibition the masks were donated to Antifa Brussels.
