dust drawing
dust drawing
Dust drawing was made with dust gathered from my studio. It intrigues me that a space captures the residue of a time passed within dust. In dust, a room collects the leftovers of lived life. All kinds of particles, wood residues, hair, skin cells, ... gather on the surface into a unique mixture that forms a sum total of local affairs. For dust drawing, the preserved dust was sprinkled on the ground to be drawn in with the backside of the same brush that gathered it.
In the drawing we see a figure sawing away the leg under its own chair. The Dutch saying de poten onder iemands stoel wegzagen - literally translated as sawing away the legs under someones chair - means to undermine someones position. The figure in the dust is undermining their own position. The dust makes it seem as if they're not only sawing away the chair leg, but themselves with it. The sawdust in combination with the drawing leaves us looking at what seems to be the residue of their past presence. As if they literally returned to dust.
