Under a sky of pixels

Under a sky of pixels

Standing in front of a window, watching the world: a bird flies towards its nest, a deer wanders in search of food, each in a different part of the world. Unaware that they are being watched, through the glass, under a pixelated sky.

Under a sky of pixels explores the viewer's position in relation to our digital world, where our screens appear as windows through which we observe, watch and familiarise ourselves with a world that is both near and far. Using images from Google Maps and live cameras accessible online, she engages in the interaction between observing natural spaces and the creatures that live there, and translating this world through painting and embroidery. The works appeal to the sensual, the gestural and the tactile, contrasting with the cold, flat surfaces of our screens and revealing the interruptions and imperfections often absent from digital spaces. Through this act of translation, the images are transformed into physical form and come to exist in another reality. In this game of being and not being, of seeing and not being seen, protected by the screens of our devices, the works comment on the dissociations of our own environment, and often our own bodies, through a dystopian attempt to connect with the environment.
