A LANDSCAPE PATINA

A LANDSCAPE PATINA

Collaboration with Marina Breit, By the Throat Design Studio, Edinburgh, April 2008

A Landscape Patina highlighted the importance of the landscape on which cities are being and have been developed. This project aimed to create a subtle mergence between the city and the landscape by adding a new layer. This work followed the tradition of land art and gave it a translation into a city context. Turf has been used as a medium because of its non-destructive nature, its reference to the Scottish landscape and its softness. The turf was laid out as a square, representing surface. Rather than the city being a layer on the landscape, the landscape became a layer on the city. A new layer, which held skin like qualities in the way that it transforms in response to the physical nature of the site.
